More Late Inning Issues Lead to Lady Argos Losses to SOU
PASCO, Wash. – Late game collapses continued plague University of Providence softball in two more losses to (3) Southern Oregon University. Of the 22 total runs the team gave up in a 13-1 loss and a 9-1 loss, 15 came in the final two innings of each game. Overall, UP went 0-4 against the Raiders on the weekend with a combined score of 54-10.
The Lady Argos did show some encouraging progressions from the previous day, committing 2 fewer errors and 14 fewer runs. With 13 hits in the two games, the team's batting was still effective as well, only the timing wasn't good with only 2 runners eventually scoring.
The losses bring UP's season record to 2-7 (0-4) after one weekend of conference play.
GAME 1
Key Moments:
- Two straight singles from Hanna Tarum (SO/Great Falls, Mont.) and Karsten Williams (JR/Sandy, Utah) in the bottom of the second put UP in a good position to tie or take the lead with the score at 1-0 SOU. In the first of a few missed scoring chances on the day, UP struck out swinging and grounded out to the pitcher on the next two at-bats and didn't end up scoring by the time the inning was over.
- With the score at 5-1 SOU entering the sixth inning, the Lady Argos were hoping to reverse the previous day's problems in the third inning, but things unraveled again in the top of the inning. A hit by pitch and a dropped fly ball started the problems and were turned into runs by back-to-back doubles. That got pitcher Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) pulled and from then on, the game was out of hand.
At the Plate:
- After a stellar showing the day before, Tarum continued to be a hitting machine. She went 2-3 from the plate and drove in the team's only run, with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the fifth.
- Catcher Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.) also had another big day, going 2-4 at the plate, including her third double of the season. Unlike what has happened the rest of the year, however, her ability to get on base didn't lead to runs as she had neither an RBI or a run for just the second time in 2018.
- A third bright spot was the hitting of Williams. She reached base twice, going 1-2 and added a walk.
In the Circle:
- Through four innings, George was having a good day. She only gave up 4 hits and 2 earned runs in the game. She allowed 2 more runs in the fifth but battled through before losing control in the sixth.
Other Notes:
- The right side of UP's infield proved to be tough to beat in the game. Second baseman Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) and Tarum, who played at first, made just about every play they could. Canibeyaz finished with 5 putouts and 2 assists, while Tarum 4 putouts.
GAME 2
Key Moments:
- UP's second at-bat of the game saw Tarum hit into a fielder's choice toward first base. The Raiders threw to third to try and tag out Henderson who was attempting to advance to third after a leadoff double. The play at the plate was close but Henderson was ruled out. Not only did that take away a runner in scoring position with 0 outs, but the senior catcher was also injured on the play and missed the rest of the game. The Lady Argos failed to score in the inning.
- -After three solid innings of pitching, the game got away from Ashton Bell (JR/Castle Dale, Utah) in the top of the fourth. SOU got 3 hits and a walk, plus benefitted from a UP fielding error to score 4 runs in the inning and pull away 6-0 by the end of the inning.
At the Plate:
- After going 2-10 in the previous three games against SOU, Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) had breakout fourth game. The team's cleanup hitter went 2-3 in the game and drove in UP's only run with a single in the bottom of the fifth.
- Williams built on an already good day, going 2-2 to finish with a line of 3-4 for the day.
- The Argos finished the game with just as many hits as the Raiders (8) but UP left 7 runners on base. SOU also had 8 walks and 8 steals.
In the Circle:
- Bell picked up the loss for the Lady Argos. She only allowed 2 runs in the first three innings but gave up 7 runs in the final two innings of the game.
Other Notes:
- Tarum and Canibeyaz had another strong defensive game on the right side of the infield. Tarum had 13 putouts in the game, while her teammate at second had 1 putout and 6 assists.
