Corban finished off the Beacons to complete the series sweep.
SALEM, Ore. – The No. 8-ranked Corban University softball team won its eighth-straight game thanks to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Christian University on Friday, completing the series sweep of the Beacons. After winning the opener in six innings, 8-0, the Warriors then captured the final game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series, 8-6.
"We had a good day today," said Corban head coach Abigail Farler. "I thought we played aggressively offensively and showed some of our strengths. Sab and Rachel pitched well for us today and gave us the opportunity to win. We had some great defensive stops during both games that were exciting to see. We look forward to hosting Simpson on Monday at our place next week."
Sabrina Boyd didn't throw a no-hitter on Friday, but she did record her fourth-straight complete-game shutout, going the distance in a six-inning win while once again giving up zero runs and just four hits.
At the dish in the triumph, Kaylee Buhrkuhl went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. In addition, Maddy Melton recorded a pair of hits and two runs scored, while Sam Woodley came up with a big RBI base knock, lifting the Warriors to the six-inning victory.
Game two saw the Warriors fall behind early and give up their first runs of the series to the Beacons, as NCU's Avery Daniels and Jessica Garner both registered RBI base hits for the Beacons in the first inning to put the visitors up, 2-0.
Corban responded with three runs in the first, however, as Megan Rybar ripped a two RBI single up the middle and then Jessie Isham laced an RBI double to left field. The Navy and Gold added on two more runs in the second, highlighted by a triple to center field by Mahina Chong.
Once again though, NCU (4-18, 2-7 CCC) fought back and cut into the deficit, as Alexis Westbrooks ripped an RBI single to center, but Isham answered immediately for Corban with an RBI triple in the fifth to make it 6-3.
Eventually leading 8-4 headed to the seventh, the Beacons rallied with a pair of runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate, but Corban's Rachel White was able to get out of the jam, securing the two-run victory.
For NCU in the defeat, Daniels went 2-for-4, as did Garner, as the team racked up 11 total hits.
For Corban, Buhrkuhl finished 2-for-4 with a couple of runs scored, while Rybar and Isham both finished 2-for-3 with two RBI each. White earned the win in the circle, tossing 5.2 innings, dispersing nine hits while allowing four runs.
Corban (15-4, 7-0 CCC) returns to action on Monday when it hosts Simpson University for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
