Fan Clinches All-American Status at Day 1 of NAIA Championships 3/2/2018 8:49:40 PM DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Eric Fan reached All-American status by solidifying himself as a top-8 finisher at the NAIA Wrestling Championships on Friday. Fan, the No. 7-seed in the 197-lb weight class, won his final match of the day in the consolation bracket to advance to the consolation quarterfinals. With the scored tied in the third period, Fan flipped his opponent, De’Andre Jones of Cumberland, for a two-point takedown with four near-fall points to win the match 8-2. Fan advanced to the quarterfinals to open the tournament after receiving a first-round bye. He then defeated Corey Hinkle of Lindsey Wilson to advance to the quarterfinals before falling by technical fall. Junior Drake Randall, the No. 2-seed at 157-lbs, also reached the quarterfinals after earning two pins in his first two matches. Randall then matched up with a familiar opponent in Brandon Weber of Montana State-Northern, but fell by a close 5-2 decision. The junior’s season ended in the consolation bracket, dropping the match to Providence’s Casey Dobson by a 3-2 decision. Junior Mhar Caballa (125-lbs) and sophomore Blake McNall (133-lbs) both also competed at nationals. Caballa opened the tournament with a win over Dylan Pelland of Baker by a 13-7 decision. Caballa then was defeated in his final two matches. McNall also opened the day strongly with a 6-4 win by sudden victory in the first round. After dropping round two by an 8-4 decision, McNall bounced back with a win over Julian Melecio of York by an 11-6 decision. However, McNall fell in the next round of consolation matches by a close 6-4 decision to end his tournament. Fan will continue his tournament on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Pacific time. He will face Elias Mason of Embry-Riddle in the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. 125 Champ.
