Cascade Collegiate Conference Approves University of British Columbia for Associate Membership in Golf and Track/Field
LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Cascade Collegiate Conference Council of President’s Executive Committee approved the associate membership application for the University of British Columbia in the sports of men’s and women’s golf, as well as, men’s and women’s track/field Conference Commissioner Robert Cashell announced.
The Thunderbird golf and track/field programs will join their softball (2015) and baseball (2016) teams as the newest additions to the CCC. The move brings all UBC NAIA sponsored sports under a single conference affiliation. “The Cascade Conference has been a great home for our softball and baseball teams and we are very excited to have golf and outdoor track/field joining in,” stated Gord Hopper, UBC Director of Athletics. “We look forward to the excellent competition that the conference offers.”
Prior to the moves UBC NAIA sports participated as an independent in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.). “The change to CCC membership will allow for the UBC student-athletes to be eligible for conference academic recognition along with providing a true conference home,” stated Commissioner Cashell. “All four programs are very strong and will bring great value and competitiveness to the CCC.”
In golf teams will be able to compete for automatic qualifications to the national tournament and a regular season title. Athletes meeting event standards will be invited to participate in the annual Track/Field Championships where they will compete for individual and team championships. Those meeting national standards throughout the season qualify for the NAIA National Championships.
The Thunderbirds, located in Vancouver, BC, will begin play in the CCC in golf and track/field with the 2018-19 seasons.
