LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team split the second day of a doubleheader with Carroll College, but won the Cascade Collegiate Conference counting game to win the series 2-1 on Friday at the Peggy Anderson Softball Field. The Mounties won game one 5-4, followed by a 5-0 loss in game two.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 5, Carroll 4
A big five-run third inning for the Mountaineers (16-10, 11-3 CCC) was all the offense they needed in a 5-4 victory over Carroll (19-11, 6-6 CCC). The victory clinched the CCC counting games for EOU, who split the doubleheader on Thursday.

After the loading the bases with no outs, senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier was hit by a pitch to bring in senior shortstop Lena Richards from the third. With two outs, junior designated player Tayler Finch looped one over the first baseman for a two-RBI single and to give EOU a 3-2 lead. The next batter, junior outfielder Bobbi Bertsch, smashed a two-run home run to extend the Mounties lead to 5-2.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline had another strong outing, pitching a complete game with nine strikeouts. After allowing two runs in the first, Kline settled down over the final six innings to allow just two more runs.

The series victory gives the Mountaineers their third straight of the season.

GAME 2 | Carroll 5, Eastern Oregon 0
With the CCC portion of the series already in hand, the Mountaineers struggled to find their offense in the final game, dropping the finale by a 5-0 score.

The Saints scored one run in the third, followed by two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Allison Williams had a great day at the plate and in the circle, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI as a batter, while pitching a complete game shutout with six strikeouts to earn her eighth win of the year.

The EOU offense was held to just three hits in the game with one by Richards and two by junior outfielder Rayne Spencer. Sophomore Ashton Kazmierski made the start for EOU, pitching six innings while junior Hannah Rothwell finished the game in relief.

The Mounties head back on the road next week, visiting conference foe Northwest on April 6 and 7. Friday’s doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. in Kirkland, Washington while Saturday’s game will begin at 10 a.m. and will be played at Cedar Park Christian High School in Bothell, Washington.
