McMINNVILLE, Ore. – High jumper Maile Kam became the first Multnomah University women's athlete to qualify for the 2018 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships as the Lions opened their outdoor track and field season in the Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker Friday-Saturday, Mar. 3-4, here at Linfield College's Maxwell Field.

Kam secured her spot in the conference meet that will be held May 11-12 in Hermiston, Ore., by clearing the bar at 4-7.75 / 1.42m, tying for seventh overall.   She also placed 17th in the javelin with a throw of 93-4.25 / 28.45m.  Sydney Amundsen was the only other Lion with a mark in the field events, finishing 24th in the long jump with a leap of 12-5.25 / 3.79m.

In the track events, Natasha Jensen and Sarah Carrier had the highest finishes, coming in 10th and 15th respectively in the 1500 meter run with times of 5:32.44 and 5:46.19.  In the 100 meter dash, Amundsen tied for 20th with a 14.32 and Jessie Roberts was 27th in 16.62.  Amundsen and Jensen were 26th and 30th in the 200 meter dash with times of 30.29 and 32.25 respectively.

The Lions also participated in a relay event for the first time, coming in ninth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:51.24.  Amundsen, Jensen, Carrier and Kam comprised the historic first relay team for Multnomah.

--- Quoting MU coach Corey Mehl:  "For the first weekend of March, we really had great conditions for the Icebreaker.  Outdoor season is all about getting Cascade Conference qualifying marks, and we were able to get really close to several in just the first meet of the season … Maile got us on the board with a CCC-qualifying high jump, our first and only qualifier so far; great start for her as she had missed several weeks with a concussion in the early part of the season.  She came back in the javelin with a throw that is only six feet shy of a CCC qualifier … Tasha ran our second-fastest 1500 ever in her debut … It was a nice start to our season with big things yet to come, as we still are hoping to have several athletes join us in the near future."

--- Next:  The Lions will be back in action Saturday, Mar. 10, in the Saints Open at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., with first events scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
