McMINNVILLE, Ore. Brian Comer in the 10,000 meter run and Jacob Brown in the discus broke school records as the Multnomah University Lions opened their 2018 outdoor track and field season with solid performances in the Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker Friday-Saturday, Mar. 3-4, here at Linfield College's Maxwell Field.

Comer got the Lions off to a good start Friday night with a 20th-place finish in the 10,000 meter run, his time of 33.46.84 shattering the previous MU record of 36:37.00 by Keegan Council in 2017.  On Saturday, Brown set a new Lions' record in the discus with a toss of 118-10.25 / 36.22m, finishing 11th and topping the old mark of 97-10 / 29.84m by Nick Muncherian in 2016.

Brown also posted a 17th-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 37-3.75 / 11.37m.  In the long jump, Marcus Krause came in 19th with a leap of 19-7 / 5.97m.

In the running events, Daniel Larabee had the Lions' highest finish as he came in 14th in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:18.99.  Robert Kochis was 20th in the same race with a 4:35.41.  Michael Kochis tied for 21st in the 200 meter dash with a 24.17 and tied for 22nd in the 100 meter dash with an 11.83, while Krause was 37th in the 100 with a 12.32.  The 4x400 meter relay squad of Michael Kochis, Larabee, Brice Robell and Robert Kochis came in 16th with a 3:49.95.

--- Quoting MU coach Corey Mehl:  "For the first weekend of March, we really had great conditions for the Icebreaker.  Outdoor season is all about getting Cascade Conference qualifying marks, and we were able to get close to several in just the first meet of the season … Brian, a grad student, kicked us off with a great race Friday night in the 10K, breaking our school record in a time just four seconds shy of a CCC qualifier.  It was his first collegiate race in nearly two years … Saturday morning also was a great start with Jacob throwing the discus for the first time ever, breaking our school record.  He fell less than a meter shy of hitting a CCC qualifier, then came back in the shot put, falling shy of a CCC qualifier by a foot-and-a-half … Marcus opened his long jump season with a mark only a few inches shy of a CCC mark; good start for Marcus as his PR in the event is over 21 feet … Daniel opened with an impressive 1500 which was only four seconds off his own school record … Mikey Kochis continued his impressive start with an all-time PR for him in the 100 that put him less than half a second off a CCC qualifier.  He also PR'd in the 200 as he looks to break the 24-second barrier … It was a nice start to our season with big things yet to come, as we still are hoping to have several athletes join us in the near future."

--- Next:  The Lions will be back in action Saturday, Mar. 10, in the Saints Open at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore., with first events scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
