HILLSBORO, Ore. - The University of Providence softball team couldn’t hold off (7) Corban University, falling in a 3-0 series sweep against the Warriors. After losing 8-0 to Corban in 5 innings the previous day, UP lost to the Warriors 8-0, this time in six innings, in Game 1 before earning their first 2 runs of the series in a 5-2 Game 2 loss.

Errors have played a big factor for the Lady Argos who had 2 in the first inning in Game 1 of the doubleheader but cleaned it up after that, committing just 1 for the rest of the game a none in Game 2. The Argos also outhit the Warriors 9-8 in the game. After the three-game series, the Lady Argos are now 5-18 in the season and 3-11 in conference.

Game 1

Key Moments:
  • The Corban Warriors took control of the game from the very start, gaining a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
  • Corban’s pitching shut down the Lady Argos majority of the game. UP only had 3 hits in the game. Kylie Gonzales (SR/Hubbard, Ore.) had one of those with a double to left center.
  • Two more runs were earned by the Warriors in the bottom of the third before widening that lead by another 2 runs for a 8-0 lead in the sixth, which ended the game.

At the Plate:
  • The only 3 hits allowed by the Warrior’s Sabrina Boyd (SR/Pleasant Hill, Ore.) came from Gonzales, Gabrielle Canibeyaz (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.), and Bailey Henderson (SR/Fernley, Nev.).
  • While the team only had 3 hits, 2 of those hits were for extra bases, with both Gonzales and Henderson hitting doubles. Both players also reached base twice, with Henderson earning a walk and Gonzales taking a hit by pitch.

In the Circle:
  • KJ Schweikert pitched her fifth complete game of the season while allowing 6 hits. She had 3 strikeouts and only 5 of the 8 runs scored by Corban were earned.
  • Boyd earned her 13th win of the season holding the Lady Argos scoreless and only allowing 3 hit with 4 strikeouts.

Game 2

Key Moments:
  • For the first time in the three-game series, both offense and defense came together for the Lady Argos. UP outhit Corban 9-8 but allowed the Warriors to earn all 5 of their runs in the first four innings.
  • The Warriors had a 5-0 lead before UP began to close the gap. In the fifth inning, Henderson started the inning with a single to center. That was followed by a single from Canibeyaz, which allowed Henderson to advance to third. With Henderson in scoring position, a fly out to left field from Gonzales gave Henderson enough time to score, putting the Lady Argos on the board.
  • A pitching change by the Warriors started off the sixth inning. First up to bat against the new pitcher for the Lady Argos was Samantha Hernandez (FR/Los Angeles, Calif.) who earned a walk to get on base. She got around the bases on a groundout from Shelby McMillen (FR/Park City, Mont.) and then an RBI double by McKenzie Staats (FR/Great Falls, Mont.) to bring a 5-2 score.

At the Plate:
  • Henderson and Hernandez lead UP’s offensive as the only two players with a run. Both batters went 1-2 from the plate with at least 1 walk.  Henderson continues to lead the Lady Argos at the plate with a .413 batting average.
  • Karsten Williams (JR/Sandy, Utah) and Canibeyaz also contributed offensively both going 2-4. With another two hits from Canibeyaz she now has 29 hits on the season.

In the Circle:
  • Kristina George (SR/Salt Lake City, Utah) did her best to hold off Corban’s offense. She allowed a total of 8 hits but only 5 runs scored, and she had 4 strikeouts.

Up Next:
UP is scheduled to face Carroll College for a make-up doubleheader from earlier in the season on Tuesday, April 10 starting at 2:00 p.m. & 4:00 p.m. in Helena, Montana.
