KIRKLAND, Wash. – Steve Bain, head women's Volleyball coach at Northwest University announced the signing of two more student athletes to join the 2018-19 season. Signing National Letters of Intent are Cristina Hegarty and Sofie Bäck. On the importance of these two signings Coach Bain mentioned, following the 2017 season, replacing several key contributors in serve-receive and adding depth to our backcourt defense became top priorities.  We believe that we have added two exceptional players in Cristina and Sofie, whose talents will not only bolster the Eagles on the court but whose intellect and character will contribute off the court as well.”

Cristina Hegarty is a 5-7 libero that played her high school volleyball for Tana Otton at Tumwater High school. As a four-year letter winner, Cristina played on two state championship teams (2014 and 2016) and was named a 1st team all conference player on 3 occasions and all area team twice. Said Bain, “Cristina comes from championship high school (Tumwater) and club programs (Capital Ice) and has the technical skill and mindset to be successful at the collegiate level.  We especially like Cristina’s fierceness and her willingness to be challenged and make changes. Cristina also has an excellent demeanor on the court and brings positive energy on every play.  We expect Cristina’s experience and background will allow her to adapt quickly to the collegiate game and we are excited to see how her NU career unfolds.”

Sofie Back – Sofie is a 5-6 libero that hails from Gislaved, Sweden.  In high school, Sofie played for Daniel Magnusson and Bo Hallberg of Gislaved Volleybollklubb.  Her club teams won several Swedish championship medals including one gold (where Sofie earned MVP), two silver and one bronze. On Sofie’s signing Bain said, “Sofie has played at the highest levels in Sweden so we knew from evaluating Sofie’s film that she was a terrific libero with the potential to be an impact player at the collegiate level.  On Sofie’s visit we also discovered a young woman that possessed the volleyball IQ and leadership intangibles that are a hallmark of the libero position.  Sofie is also a great teammate that thrives on making her teammates better.  We are thrilled that Sofie has decided to pursue her college career at Northwest University and believe that she has a bright future in Eagle volleyball.”
