Northwest University Drops Season Opener
LANGLEY, BC, CANADA – Northwest University traveled to Langley, BC, to compete in a difficult season opener. The Spartans of Trinity Western University were able to capitalize on a free kick deflected by Northwest University’s own player to score the first goal in the third minute of play to lead 1-0.
Danae Derksen of Trinity Western added to their lead 9 minutes later by placing the ball in the top left corner to extend Trinity Western’s lead 2-0.
Bailey Travis of Northwest University responded quickly with a shot that missed high. Northwest University had 6 shots on the day, with 2 being on goal.
Trinity Western continued to put the pressure on the Eagles. They played a physical game with 15 fouls compared to Northwest’s 3 fouls. The Spartans added 2 more goals in the second half. Amy Gartke scored the third goal of the game in the fifty-fourth minute, and Gabi Short scored the fourth goal in the sixty-fifth minute.
Head coach Bryan Chud recapped the game by saying, “We gave away an early own goal and missed a penalty shot. I am proud of the effort the girls put in, and we can definitely see the areas we need to improve on to be at the level we want to be. Now we turn around and go again tomorrow.”
