Puget Sound Tops Geoducks on Second Half Tally
Evergreen put together a strong 90-minute performance Sunday afternoon, but in the end a second half Puget Sound goal proved to be the difference as the Loggers took a 1-0 women's soccer victory at Geoduck Pitch.
After an even first half ended with both teams taking four shots, the visitors from Tacoma had a bit more of the ball in the second half and that possession eventually paid off in the 60th minute. Kendra Elderkin hit a long ball down the right wing to Tess Peppis, whose cross found Gabbie Berg for a one-time finish from about 10 yards out.
The Geoducks (0-2) finished the match with seven shots, with all three of their shots on goal coming in the second half. Puget Sound goalkeeper Jamie Lange was up to the task, getting the clean sheet. Her late diving save on a free kick by Madison Early preserved the shutout.
The Loggers, who played the game as a scrimmage, had a 12-7 advantage in shots and took four corner kicks to one for the Geoducks. Daphne Hobbs, the freshman goalkeeper from Redway, Calif., was again sharp in goal with four saves, giving her 17 in two matches.
The Geoducks travel to the San Francisco Bay Area this coming weekend to play a pair of games. They will meet UC Santa Cruz at 1 p.m. Friday at Mills College in Oakland, before facing Mills College at noon on Sunday.
