EOU Women’s Soccer Rolls Past Arizona Christian 5-0
PHOENIX, Ariz. –The Eastern Oregon’s women’s soccer team put five goals past Arizona Christian on Monday night, led by a first half hat trick from freshman Mackinley Gregus.
“The ladies played hard this whole weekend,” said head coach Jacob Plocher. “We wanted to leave Arizona undefeated and we are happy with the results. We saw a lot of great things from the team and some areas we can still clean up. We are excited about where this group can go.”
The EOU women’s soccer team continued its season-opening winning streak as it put on a dominant performance against Arizona Christian. It did not take long for the Mountaineers (2-0) to open the scoring, as just five minutes into the game Gregus already had her first two collegiate goals to her name.
Sophomore Morgan Farrington added her name to the score sheet when junior Jenna Jenson played her a ball into the box before the 10-minute mark to make it 3-0 early.
With already two goals under her belt, Gregus was still hungry for more. The freshman netted the hat trick minutes after Farrington, making it 4-0 before 13 minutes of play. The Mounties remained on the attack for the rest of the half but the score stayed unchanged for the next 32 minutes.
After the break, the Blue and Gold continued to create chances and got their fifth goal of the game when freshman Yahaira Chaverria-Mondrago connected with redshirt junior Abri Cardenas for the final goal.
Senior Taylor Boyer and junior Nan Kiebert added an assist each on Gregus’ first two goals.
Not only was the attack a dominant force on Monday, but the defense also held up in the back, limiting the opponents to 10 shots and only two on goal. Junior Cydni Cottrell and senior Val Gaffney split time in the net, making one save a piece while sharing the shutout.
The Mounties rest up in La Grande for a few days before travelling to Incline Village, Nevada, where they meet Hope International on Sept. 5 and Sierra Nevada on Sept. 6.
