PHOENIX, Ariz. - The Eastern Oregon men’s soccer team got its first win of the season, downing Arizona Christian 3-1 on the road Thursday night.

The Mountaineers (1-1) came out strong in the first half, immediately causing problems for the ACU defence. The first goal came at the 16th minute mark as junior Alex Gutierrez got on the end of a ball from senior Aldo Rivas, netting his second goal of the season on Rivas’ first assist.

The Mounties did not take their foot of the gas pedal and notched another goal before the break. Junior Carlos Solorio controlled a ball in the box before calmly placing it in the goal to make it 2-0.

After the break, the Blue and Gold continued to pressure the Firestorms’ backline. Solorio got his second goal of the game when he slotted home a ball from senior Elvis Pavon.

The Mounties dominated the attack, finishing the game with 21 shots, eight of which were on goal. Solorio led the team with five shots with Pavon right behind him with four.

Despite conceding a goal, defensively, the Mountaineers were strong in the back by limiting their opponents to only four shots on goal. Senior Aiden Wright came up with three big saves to deny the Firestorm.

The Mountaineers next match is schedule for Saturday when they take on Embry-Riddle in Prescott Arizona at 7 p.m.
