Geoducks Lead Early But Saints Win in Overtime
TUMWATER - Evergreen built a 2-0 lead just 12:10 into the match and led at the half, but Saint Martin's rallied to tie it in regulation and then won in overtime, 3-2, in a women's soccer match played Tuesday night at Black Hills High School.
The Geoducks (1-4-0) came out on fire and found the back of the net twice in the early going. Madison Early scored her second goal of the season at 5:29, running onto a pass from Delaney Rice and hitting a left-footed shot over Saint Martin's goalkeeper Sara Christensen. Less than seven minutes later, the green-shirted home team made the score 2-0 with Ana Vigil doing the work. She took a pass from Early and hit a right-footed shot past Christensen and to the far left side of the net.
Evergreen maintained the pressure throughout the first half and held an 8-4 advantage in shots through the opening 45 minutes.
The second half was flipped, however, as the Saints held most of the possession and got off 14 shots compared to two for Evergreen. Saint Martin's got a goal back at 55:19 when Kylee Sarchett found the net, converting on a through ball from Kiersten Madsen. Sarchett had an assist on the next goal when Shea McKnight lofted a shot over Evergreen keeper Megan Breckenridge and into the back of the net at 68:06.
With the pressure mounting, Evergreen defended in numbers and took counter opportunities when they were available. Saint Martin's came close to winning the game with 4:30 remaining in regulation, but Breckenridge tipped a shot from Jolene Kvinsland off of the crossbar.
Sarchett ended her outstanding offensive performance - and the match - 3:55 into the overtime period when she took a pass from McKnight and beat Breckenridge.
Saint Martin's ended up with a 19-11 advantage in shots and forced six saves from Breckenridge, a former Evergreen volleyball player trying her hand at soccer. Christensen was forced to make four saves for the Saints. Corner kicks were even at 3-3.
Evergreen opens Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Friday when it plays Corban in Salem, Ore.
