LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women’s volleyball team hosted Evergreen State on Friday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play, winning in straight sets to run their sweep streak to four matches. EOU continued its recent dominant form, winning the last 12 sets spanning four matches.

The Mountaineers (9-4, 4-1 CCC) handed the Geoducks (6-8, 4-1 CCC) their first conference loss of the season (25-22, 25-15, 25-17). Evergreen State came into the match hot, coming out on top in their last five matches. Unfortunately for them, they ran into a Mountaineer team that hasn’t lost a set in the month of September, recording four straight sweeps.

Junior outside hitter Megan Bunn turned in one of her most impressive performances of the year, recording a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs, while hitting at a .406 clip. Junior Hailee Ackerman also played very efficiently, smashing 11 kills with a .304 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Madison Pilon set up the hitters all night, accumulating 24 assists.

The first set was evenly matched for the first 19 points, with EOU leading 10-9. The Mountaineers were then able to go on a 10-3 run that helped them take the set 25-22. Evergreen fought back after the Mountie run, but EOU was able to hold on late.

Bunn and Pilon were a dynamic tandem in the first set, with Pilon recording nine assists, and Bunn tallying five kills. For the Geoducks, freshman setter Sierra Wolff connected with her teammates seven times in the first set, and she went on to finish with a game-high 26 assists.

The Mountaineers came out very strong in the second set, claiming a 10-4 lead early on. The lead grew to as many as 10 points, and they didn’t look back, cruising to a 25-13 win. EOU captured all of the momentum in the gym, extending their set lead to 2-0.

The final set of the night also went well for the Mountaineers, winning 25-17. They dictated play all night, earning their fourth straight win, all of which were in conference.

The Geoducks struggled hitting throughout the contest, but senior Lehualani Keka and junior Renita Gray were both able to reach nine kills.

Defensively for the Mountaineers, sophomore Kiley McMurtrey added 15 digs to the EOU effort, and freshman Jet Taylor headed the block party with four block assists. The Mounties ended the night with eight total team blocks, five more than Evergreen.

Eastern Oregon takes the court again Saturday against Northwest in Quinn Coliseum at 5 p.m.
