No. 21 EOU Recovers After Setback, Defeats Northwest in 4 9/15/2018 8:44:46 PM LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 21 Eastern Oregon volleyball team ran its win streak to five matches, defeating Northwest in four sets Saturday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play at Quinn Coliseum. The Mountaineers (10-4, 5-1 CCC) hit .291 for the match, led by dominant second sets in which they hit over .350 in each. Junior outside hitter Megan Bunn led the team for the second night in a row with 17 kills and a .371 attack percentage. She also added a double-double with 11 digs. After dropping the first set, ending a string of 12-straight set wins, the Mountaineers returned to their recent impressive form and took the final three sets convincingly. The Eagles (5-9, 1-4 CCC) couldn’t keep up with EOU after a solid 26-24 first set win. Fellow junior outside hitter Hailee Ackerman had 11 kills while junior middle hitter Taylor Tibbetts added eight kills and a .368 hitting percentage. EOU started the match very slowly, falling behind 3-9 in the first set, but were able to collect themselves and even the score at 10-10. The uncharacteristic play to start the match was attributed to a few key errors that the Eagles were able to capitalize on, and strong defensive play by Northwest. After the two runs, the rest of the set was tightly contested, but a couple miscommunication-plays late hurt the Mounties. The Eagles went on to take the set 26-24. The Mountaineers cleaned up their play after the close first set to dominate with a 25-8 victory in set two. Senior Sarah Carpenter recorded two of four EOU aces in the set. The third set was a continuation of set two as the Mountaineers continued to control momentum with strong execution. The Mountaineers felt little resistance, cruising to a 25-12 win. Both teams competed hard in the fourth set, but with the score tied 21-21, EOU scored four of the final five points to claim the match. Senior setter Sarah Carpenter led the Mounties with 22 assists, while sophomore Madison Pilon had 19. Sophomore Kiley McMurtrey had 18 digs and Carpenter finished off a double-double with 10 digs. The Blue and Gold controlled the front of the net with an advantage of 8.5-3 in blocks. Junior Allyson Crisp led the way with five block assists while Tibbetts added four. On the Eagles side, Keann White led the team with 11 kills and a .304 hitting percentage. Cristina Hegarty led all players with 21 digs while Courteney Carr had a double-double of 25 assists and 11 digs. Eastern Oregon heads back on the road next weekend, visiting Northwest Christian on Friday in Eugene, Oregon and Corban on Saturday in Salem.
