KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Oregon Tech men's soccer team split on the home opener weekend in conference play, falling 1-0 to the No. 9 ranked Rocky Mountain College on Saturday afternoon. The loss moves the Owls to 2-3-1 overall and 1-1 in CCC action. RMC also goes to 1-1 in CCC play and 5-2-0 overall with the win.
The first half of play saw the home side defend well against the strong foe, limiting scoring chances to just 4 shots, as goalkeeper Gerardo Skewes picked up 2 saves on their shots on frame. Tech found a number of their own chances, finding 3 shots and putting 2 of them on frame. Tech also created 5 corner kick opportunities, none of them able to be converted into goals. The score remained level at 0-0 heading into the break.
The second half of play saw the stalemate change in the 63rd minute, as Rocky Mountain's Mason Luse was able to break through the Owls backline and slot a through ball into the bottom corner for the only goal of the contest. The Owls battled for the remainder of the contest, outshooting the Bears 6-1 in the half, but were not being able to find the back of the net as the game ended at 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
Coach Munhall comments, "We came out with a game plan that we felt would put us in the hunt for a W, and we were right there the entire contest. Our team played well and together for the entire contest, out shooting our opponent 9 to 5, while creating 7 corner kick opportunities without giving up 1 to Rocky Mountain. Soccer is one of those games where small errors can be costly, even when you feel that you did a lot of things right. We are still growing as a team and have 11 more conference games to play. We are on the right path."
The Owls will head to College Place, Washington this coming week, as they take on Walla Walla University on Friday at 3:00 pm.
