SOU hangs on to defeat Yotes, 1-0

ASHLAND – In a game full of near-misses, Makena Totushek's shot two minutes into the afternoon was the only one that mattered as Southern Oregon hung on for a 1-0 win against College of Idaho on Sunday at Raider Stadium.
The Raiders (4-1-1 overall, 2-0 Cascade Conference) survived a perfect weekend by dodging a flurry of Yotes chances in the second half, where they were outshot 13-7. The win was their third in a row overall, and they've gone unbeaten in five straight since a season-opening loss.
Totushek, a senior midfielder, got her second score of the year and first game-winner after the Yotes (3-2-1, 0-2) tried to clear the ball from in front of the goal. Totushek stepped in front of the pass on top of the box, and with a defender on her right side she struck a left-footed, straight-on shot from 18 yards just inside the left post.
Since the start of 2016, the Raiders have won 15 of 17 game at home. Dating back to last season, they've also kept 11 consecutive opponents from tallying multiple goals.
Junior keeper Kailey Lemon picked up her second shutout in a row by recording four saves – two in each half.
In the second half, the Raiders escaped a Madison Glascock shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down in front of the line; a five-second sequence where the Yotes got off three close shots, two of which were blocked and the last of which was smothered by Lemon; and a Jocelyn Cook-Cox free kick inside the box that sailed just inches over the crossbar.
SOU finished with an 18-17 edge in shots but saw eight saved by keeper Shae Waters. Totushek was responsible for four shots on goal.
The Raiders have won three straight 1-0 decisions against C of I. The Yotes have dropped four straight matchups in Ashland.
SOU is in action next Friday at No. 19-ranked Eastern Oregon.
