Geoducks Dominate Stats, Knights Win on the Scoreboard
Evergreen dominated the statistics page but it was Warner Pacific that held the advantage on the scoreboard as the Knights left Geoduck Pitch on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference women's soccer victory.
The Geoducks (1-7-0 overall, 0-3-0 CCC) finished with a 26-9 margin in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net as Warner Pacific goalkeeper Alyssa Guthrie finished with nine saves.
Warner Pacific (3-5-0, 2-0-0) scored a goal in each half, getting the first at 37:40 against the run of play. Ashley Giesbers took a pass near midfield, took several dribbles into the offensive end and hit a low shot past charging Evergreen goalkeeper Megan Breckenridge for her fifth tally of the season.
When the half ended about 7 ½ minutes later, statistics showed Evergreen with 20 total shots, including eight on goal, to just two shots, one on goal, for the visitors. Guthrie was up to the task in that half with eight saves.
The second half was closer in terms of possession and shots, but it was the Knights who doubled their lead and closed the scoring at 61:08 when Claudia Flores tallied her first of the season. She was sent behind the defense by Joie Lopez, took a touch and slid her shot under Breckenridge.
Warner Pacific had one other shot cleared off of the line by Evergreen defender Felicia Collins in the second half.
Delaney Rice finished with eight shots, Madison Early ended up with seven and Maddie Lockwood had four as the Geoducks peppered the Warner Pacific goal. Early put three of her shots on target and both Rice and Lockwood had two that were saved by Guthrie.
Evergreen is slated to return to action at 3 p.m. tomorrow when first-year program Multnomah University visits Geoduck Pitch.
