Despite leading the shot count by an overwhelming margin (22-6) on Friday afternoon, the Warriors were unable to find the back of the net in their first CCC loss of the 2018 season.
SALEM, Ore. – The chances were many for the Corban University women's soccer team on Friday afternoon. However, the inability to capitalize on opportunities—contrasted with Carroll College's impressive efficiency—plagued the Warriors in their 2-0 loss to the Saints. The losing effort marks the first Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) defeat of the year for the Navy and Gold.
"It was a tough game today," said head coach Likius Hafeni. "We started very well, but conceded a softy goal, which killed out rhythm. Once we conceded the second goal, we struggled to get back into the game. They played well, but I think we could've done a little bit better to get on the scoresheet."
Despite outshooting Carroll on the afternoon, 22-6, Corban mustered just four shots on frame, unable to find the finishing touch against a resilient Saints defense. On the opposite side, four of Carroll's six shots were on goal, with the Saints netting two of them to power the triumph.
Kirsten Girolami opened the scoring for Carroll, hooking her second goal of the year into the right-side netting to put the Saints ahead in the 15th minute. Lizzie Sheldon added the insurance, sneaking her team-leading fifth goal of the season past Warrior goalkeeper Elizabeth Brock.
For the Warriors, Hannah Shore once again showed how dangerous a threat her speed and strength can be, firing off a team-best seven shots in the defeat.
Though Corban (5-3, 2-1 CCC) was on the verge of striking throughout much of the contest, the Warriors will hope to convert more opportunities as they ahead to another important CCC matchup tomorrow. The Navy and Gold will welcome the University of Providence for the finale of the team's weekend doubleheader, with kick-off set for 1 p.m.
