SALEM, Ore. – The No. 20-ranked Corban University men’s soccer team blasted Carroll College (Mont.) on Friday afternoon, downing the Saints, 4-0. The Warriors scored twice in the span of less than a minute in both the first and second halves, resulting in the four-goal triumph.
“The first group controlled the tempo early in the match and never really let Carroll get a rhythm today,” said Corban University head men’s soccer coach Aaron Lewis. “I was proud of the guys that came in to finish the game as well. I think this was one of their best performances, and it sets us up well for tomorrow.”
Lewis, who recently became the winningest head coach in program history with 85 wins, earned his 86th on Friday.
In the first half, Camilo Avendano got on the end of a cross from Alex Segovia in the 15th minute of play, burying a volley into the back of the net to make it 1-0. Less than 45 seconds later, Kohl Hurtado received a pass 30 yards from goal, beat two defenders and then slotted his shot into the lower-left corner to make it 2-0.
Corban racked up 13 shots to just four for Carroll during the first 45 minutes.
In the second stanza, the Warriors hit the post on three different occasions, keeping the match within reach for the Fighting Saints. Julio Miranda then put the nail in the coffin to close the door on Carroll (2-3, 1-2 CCC), however, beating the keeper in the 88th minute of play off an assist from Travez Whyte.
Later in that same minute of play, Christian Silva scored on a beautiful diving header off an assist from Quentin Petcu to cap off the exciting win for the Navy and Gold.
Corban finished with 26 shots to Carroll’s 15, and the Warriors totaled six corner kicks to Carroll’s four.
Corban (6-1, 3-0 CCC) returns to the pitch tomorrow when it hosts the University of Providence. Kickoff at the CFC Soccer Complex is slated for 3:30 p.m.
