Gregus’ Golden Goal Propels Mounties Past Owls 9/23/2018 7:38:37 PM LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team took down Oregon Tech 3-2 in overtime Sunday afternoon as freshmen Mackinley Gregus buried the golden goal in the first overtime period. The Mountaineers (6-1-1, 2-1-1 CCC) came back from a goal down two separate times in Sunday's Cascade Collegiate Conference matchup thanks to two second half goals by senior midfielder Taylor Boyer. Gregus then lasered a shot in the 100th minute to defeat Oregon Tech (4-2-2, 1-1-1 CCC). The Mountaineers trailed 1-0 at the halftime break due to a goal from Oregon Tech's Haley Janky. EOU was out shot 8-6 in the first half, but was able to flip a switch in the second, outshooting the Owls 12-4. Boyer was the focal point of the offense in the second half, finding the back of the net twice on five shots. The senior midfielder scored the game-tying goal in the 76th minute on a pass from Camie Edgington after a corner kick to make it 2-2. Boyer's first goal came on a penalty kick in the 49th minute as she scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season. Gregus came in as a substitute with five minutes left in overtime, and she made her presence known right away. With 30 seconds left in the first period of overtime, Gregus settled a ball on the left wing and fired a shot into the top-right corner of the net to win the game for the Blue and Gold. The game-winner from the freshman forward was her sixth goal of 2018. Senior goalkeeper Val Gaffney made three saves in net to earn the victory. The women's soccer team won both of their contests this weekend and will take on College of Idaho in a rivalry matchup on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at Community Stadium. Thursday night's game will be for Black Out Night, with free EOU T-Shirts given away to the first 25 students to both the women's and men's games.
