Raiders, Beacons settle on 1-1 draw
SOU Sports Information
ASHLAND – Misty Martinez put Southern Oregon in front in the 38th minute, but the Raiders were marred by missed chances the rest of the way and settled for a 1-1 draw Saturday against Northwest Christian after two overtime sessions at Raider Stadium.
Sierra Coloma accounted for the equalizer in the 66th minute that made the Beacons 1-3-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the Cascade Conference. SOU went to 4-2-2 and 2-1-1 despite a 21-10 advantage in shots.
Martinez's goal, a five-yard, centered shot on one touch, was set up by an on-the-money pass from Maddie Casey on the right side. It was her second of the season.
Casey's stellar performance was nearly upgraded by a deep shot that struck the left post in the second half, ultimately typifying SOU's frustrations. After outshooting the Beacons 10-1 in the first half, NCU keeper Katie Hastings made four of her six saves in the second.
Coloma capitalized. After a Raider and a Beacon collided just outside the box on the right side, the ball slipped backed to her and she fired a 20-yard bullet that slipped over keeper Jessie Selby's hands.
The Raiders had a chance seconds before the end of regulation on a free kick that was blocked. During the overtime sessions, neither team placed a shot on goal.
The Raiders will be home again at 11 a.m. Sunday against Corban (6-4, 3-2), which moved just ahead of them in the conference point standings with a 1-0 win Saturday at Oregon Tech.
