TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The Eastern Oregon women's cross country team had their first meet of the season Friday afternoon, finishing in sixth place at the College of Southern Idaho Classic.

The 5,000-meter race featured many new faces to the program. Six of the nine EOU competitors that finished were freshmen, who got their first glimpse of collegiate action.

Freshman runner Katie Jo Gebhardt out of Salmon, Idaho led the way for the Mountaineers, finishing in 27th place with a time of 21:05.1. Finishing between College of Idaho's third and fourth runners was an impressive performance for Gebhardt, which encouraged head coach Ben Welch.

The Mountaineers had three other runners finish in the top-40, which included two more freshmen. Freshman Michelle Herbes placed 34th with a time of 21:50.4, followed by fellow freshman Molly Gulden in 37th (22:21.0) and sophomore Megan Boals in 39th place (22:43.3).

Other finishers for the Mounties were freshman Calista Van Delden in 41st place (23:10.9), freshman Dierdre McKay in 44th (23:39.6), freshman Kendra Blake in 46th (23:58.8), freshman Maliah Russell in 47th, and junior Brylee Moyle in 49th.

"While we were hoping to be closer to NNU and College of Southern Idaho, I am by and large encouraged by the effort today from our young squad," said head coach Ben Welch after the race.

The women's team will look ahead to their next race September 21st at 6 p.m. for the Eastern Oregon Invitational in La Grande at Lane Farms.
