No. 20 Mounties Fend off Knights at Home 33-14

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The No. 20 Eastern Oregon men’s wrestling team crushed Warner Pacific 33-14 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.
 
The Mountaineers got victories from senior Mhar Caballa, freshman Keegan Mulhill, senior Jacob Dupuis, sophomore Marco Retano and sophomore Noel Orozco. Freshman Tyler Wilson and graduate student Dino May picked up wins by forfeit.
 
Caballa opened the evening with a 16-5 major decision over WPU’s Connor Finch. Caballa, the No. 4-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds in the NAIA, continued his winning streak, controlling the entire match against Finch.
 
After a technical fall victory, a forfeit and decision win for the Knights, EOU trailed 14-4. However, they rolled off wins in the next six matches to easily defeat Warner Pacific.
 
Mulhill dispatched WPU’s Chas Peterson by a 20-3 technical fall at 157 pounds. Dupuis then followed up with a pin in just 22 seconds, bringing EOU back ahead 15-14.
 
In one of the matches of the night, Retano went toe-to-toe with Mark Meier. Retano led through two periods, but Meier earned a late escape to tie the score 3-3. Regulation ended, however, Retano earned one point by eclipsing the riding time threshold, thus winning 4-3.
 
Wilson and May picked up their forfeit victories to secure the win on the night for the Mountaineers, going ahead 30-14. In the final match, however, Orozco capped off the evening for the EOU with a 4-1 win by decision.
 
The Blue and Gold next compete at the Clackamas Open on Jan. 20 in Oregon City, Ore.
