EOU Men's Basketball Outlasts Beacons 87-82 1/20/2019 12:27:52 AM LA GRANDE, Ore.- The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team defeated Northwest Christian in a thrilling Saturday night match 87-82 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. The Mountaineers (12-10, 8-4 CCC) completed a sweep at Quinn Coliseum in what would prove to be a very exciting second half. Returning from the break, EOU led by four but the Beacons (15-6, 7-4 CCC) were valiant opponents. The score went back and forth several times, with six different lead changes overall. EOU was dominant in the paint in the second half, scoring 20 of their 48 points compared to NCU's 12 points. Junior Jarek Schetzle had an impressive night for the Blue and Gold, leading both teams with 25 points. Schetzle proved to be a force at the defensive end, pulling down eight rebounds with three blocks, all of which came in crucial moments in the second half. Junior Landon Jones recorded his third double double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan May added 15 points to the attack and was very calm and collected at the free throw line, hitting 10-of-10, with many late in the second half. Sophomore Peter Hamilton also had seven points and six rebounds. Free throws were crucial down the stretch for the Mountaineers, hitting 6-for-6 in the last 46 seconds. With 46 seconds left to play, May's free throws gave the Mounties a three point cushion and Kobi Gardea's free throws extended the lead to five points just seconds later. However, the Beacons pulled it back to a three point game with seven seconds left on the clock. The Mountaineer defense then prevailed and a pair of May free throws ended the Beacons hope and gave the Mountaineers their eighth CCC win. Northwest Christian was led offensively by Austin Tyner and Tyrus Hosley's 22 points. Devante Cleveland added 15 points and four boards. The Beacons shot an impressive 95% at the free throw line, making 19 of their 20 attempts.
