EOU Men’s Basketball Claims 86-68 Win Over Evergreen in Return Home

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In the first home game since Dec. 1, the Eastern Oregon men’s basketball team pulled away in the second half, defeating Evergreen State 86-68 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday night in Quinn Coliseum.
 
A quick start to the second period of play gave the Mountaineers (9-8, 4-2 CCC) a double digit lead for the final 19:49 of the game. Junior Landon Jones scored the first seven points of the half in a minute and a half to give EOU a 50-36 lead, one that continued to increase until the final buzzer.
 
In the first half, the Mountaineers were carried offensively by sophomore Jordan May and junior Jarek Schetzle, who tallied 34 of the team’s 43 points in the first 20 minutes. May had 22 points in just the first half, shooting 14 times while making 4-of-6 three’s. Schetzle was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field with 12 points to start the game.
 
It was an all-around team effort in the second half with 10 players knocking down baskets. Jones had 11 of his 13 points while freshman Robbie Simpson came off the bench with all eight of his points.
 
Overall, EOU shot 55 percent from the field, including a 61 percent clip in the first half. They controlled the glass with a 40-28 advantage on rebounds, including 18 offensive boards, and 36 points in the paint. The Mounties led nearly the whole contest, with Evergreen’s last lead at 30-28 with 6:57 to play in the first half.
 
Schetzle had a game-high nine rebounds, with seven on the offensive glass. May added six boards with three assists, two blocks and two steals in another great game for the sophomore. Jones also had six rebounds with three assists. Freshman Zane Wright added eight points while Brock Johnson and Joel Anderson had three assists apiece.
 
On the Geoducks’ (5-11, 1-7 CCC) side, Elijah Fuller led the team with 14 points. Dalton Groenewold had 13, Mana Niu added 11 points and Ryan Quigley posted 10. Evergreen shot 7-for-15 from behind the arc in the first half to nearly keep pace with EOU, but connected on just 1-of-5 in the second half.
 
The Mountaineers will stay at home on Saturday, hosting Northwest (10-10, 2-6) at 7:30 p.m. in Quinn Coliseum.
