SALEM, Ore. – While holding Multnomah University to its second-lowest scoring output of the 2018-19 campaign, the Corban University men's basketball team poured in 97 points on the way to a 97-67 triumph over the Lions. Six different players scored in double-figures for the Navy and Gold in the victory.
"Our guys bought into what we needed to do defensively vs. one of the best shooting teams in the conference," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "For the most part, we were able to force tough contested shots and held them to 34% from the field. Beau, Dalton, and Tilly did a great job of rebounding and scoring inside. I'm also super proud of Jaxon Hughes who helped lead our guys on both ends of the floor!"
The game started out with Multnomah nailing a three-pointer and a layup, and the Lions looked to be well on their way to another high-scoring affair, but Corban then found its own rhythm offensively and played lock-down defense for the remainder of the half and took an 11-point lead into the break.
Dominating inside all night long, Corban scored 44 points in the paint to just 22 for Multnomah, and the Warriors hauled in 58 boards while limiting the Lions to just 29. All of this led to good ball movement and a number of open looks in the second half for the Navy and Gold, resulting in the 30-point triumph.
Corban shot 41.9% from downtown, hitting 13 three-pointers. Multnomah did make 14 long-range efforts, but the Lions shot at just a 30.4% clip from deep. Overall, the Warriors shot 53.4% while playing the stifling defense to limit Multnomah to just a 34.2% mark from the field.
AJ Hodges led the way offensively for Corban with 21 points, seven boards, and four assists, while Beau Roggenbach turned in a near triple-double performance, scoring 15 points while hauling in 19 boards and dishing out eight assists.
Four other Warriors finished in double-figures, with Dalton Patchen scoring 15 to go with 11 rebounds, Jaxon Hughes chipping in 15 points on five long-range efforts, Mike Seng totaling 11 points with a trio of shots from deep, and Beau Tilleman also recording 11 points in the win.
For the Lions, the CCC's leading scorer Justin Martin went 11-for-24 from the floor and scored 25 points, shooting just 3-for-11 from downtown. Ben Grandle added 15 points and Zach Richardson totaled 14 points in the loss.
Corban (12-5, 3-4 CCC) returns to the hardwood next weekend when it travels south to take on Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon University. Tipoffs on Friday and Saturday are slated for 7:30 p.m. in Klamath Falls and Ashland, respectively.
