SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team began homecoming weekend with an impressive 3-1 victory over the Raiders of Southern Oregon University on Friday afternoon. Chanel Garcia tallied an early goal in just the 7th minute of play that sparked the Warriors and got them off and running, then Annouscka Kordom added a pair of goals to deliver the victory.
"A high-level goal from Chanel early on was key to helping us start strong," said head coach Derek Faulkner. "It was an impressive performance from the team today. They were mentally dialed in from the first whistle and set the tempo with their ball movement."
Corban boasted the first tally of the match in the 7th minute, when Garcia planted a missile into the right side of the netting from just in front of the frame. Skyla Vogelpohl aided the play with a beautifully-placed through ball.
The Raiders responded well to the early goal, with Maddie Casey notching her second goal of the season in the 32nd minute to draw the score even. She received assists from Brionna Wood and Michala Denn on the play.
The game-winning goal by Kordom was scored in the 47th minute, just after the midway break. She was granted a penalty kick when a Raiderdefender was called for a hand ball in the box, converting the opportunity to put Corban ahead. Kordom's strike was a low one to the left side of the net that just snuck past Raider goalkeeper Jessie Selby.
Later in the match, Kordom struck again with a beautiful blast off of a steal just in front of the net. She drove the shot past Selby for some valuable insurance for the Navy and Gold.
The Warriors took 10 shots in the game and the Raiders tallied nine, while each team had four shots on goal. In the end, Corban was able to take advantage of the opportunities it received, something the team felt was key in this crucial weekend of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play.
The Warriors have improved their conference record to 5-3-1, and will look to stay on the winning track at home tomorrow against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech (5-0-2, CCC). This marks the Warriors' final doubleheader weekend of the regular season, as the squad will travel to Eugene, Ore. next weekend to take on Northwest Christian before returning home for the regular-season finale against Rocky Mountain College (Mont.) on November 3.
