Eastern Oregon Drops Walla Walla on Senior Day
WWU Sports Information
College Place, Wash. – Walla Walla University (WWU) hosted the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon University (EOU) Sunday afternoon at the WWU Soccer Complex. The Mountaineers (5-8-1, 3-6-0 CCC) used a three-goal first half to guide them to a 6-0 victory over the Wolves (3-11-0, 1-8-0 CCC).
In wet field conditions, both teams played even for the first nine minutes before the Mountaineers were able to break through for the first goal of the match. After a Kudzai Mhondiwa save attempt gave the Mountaineers a corner kick, Eric Mattice kicked a corner kick right into the box. A Wolves defender read the pass and attempted to clear the ball outside of the box, however, the ball was headed instead back into the goal to give EOU a 1-0 lead.
The Mountaineers continued to press forward with their attack, but Wolves’ goalkeeper Mhondiwa executed several save attempts to keep the Wolves within striking distance. EOU finally broke through the Wolves defense again in the 43rd minute. Joequin Bermejillo created space after faking a shot at the goal to create more room, moving multiple Wolves defenders out of his way. From here he dribbled through open space and found the bottom right of the goal to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead.
A minute passed as EOU took the change of possession from the Wolves and created their third goal of the half as Alex Gutierrez found Felipe Madero, who successfully placed the ball into the upper right left part of the goal to give the visiting Mountaineers a 3-0 lead heading into the half.
EOU scored two more goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to extend their lead 5-0. The Mountaineers added an additional goal in the 62nd minute to increase their lead, as they went onto win the match 6-0 and picked up their third win in conference play. Javier Moran led the EOU surge, scoring two goals and assisting in another.
The Wolves continue their season next weekend in Helena, Mont. to take on Carroll College on Friday, October 25 at 3 p.m. MST. The Mountaineers travel home and will host the Eagles of Northwest University on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m.
