Volleyball 10/19/2019 9:40:00 PM Isabelle Statkus, Sports Information Assistant No. 5 Mountaineers Hand Walla Walla Sweep LA GRANDE, Ore. - The No. 5 Eastern Oregon volleyball team had another sweep Saturday night against the Walla Walla Wolves (1-20, 0-14 CCC), improving their record to 23-1 overall and 13-1 in Cascade Conference play. The Mountaineers handled the Wolves in three straight sets (25-20, 25-12, 25-14) like they have for the past five years. EOU has swept Walla Walla at home since 2015 when the Wolves were officially added into the CCC. Leading the Mountaineer offense was the sophomore class, which hit a cumulative .244. Sophomore middle Cambree Scott tallied a team high of eight kills as well as two blocks, sophomore outside Breanna Shaffer recorded seven kills, and fellow sophomore middle Jet Taylor had six kills. Junior setter Madison Pilon led the team in assists at 20 while freshman setter Brooke Dodge also added 10 of her own. Defensively, Kiley McMurtrey collected 14 digs while Pilon had seven. The Mountainee's were not fazed by the Wolves in the first set even though Walla Walla was within five points throughout . The two teams were almost tied at 19-18, but the Mountaineers pulled away to win the set 25-20. The second set was more of the Mountaineers' speed, pulling ahead early leading at 6-2. EOU never lost their pace, keeping distance between themselves and the Wolves, leading by 14 points at 22-8 before claiming the set 25-12. The third and final set summed up the sweep with EOU leading by 10 at 18-8 and then again at 24-14. A Wolves error gave the Mountaineers the win 25-14. For Walla Walla, Sarah Halversen ledthe team in kills with six. Digs were led by Emi Bezman with 11 and assists were paced by Krista Schafer with nine. EOU is on the road next weekend in Washington with matches against Northwest University in Kirkland and The Evergreen State College in Olympia.
