No. 6 Mountaineers Cruise Past Providence 4-0 for 7th Win

LA GRANDE, Ore.- On Saturday afternoon, the No. 6 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team used three second half goals to defeat the University of Providnece 4-0 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game at Community Stadium.

It was a competitive battle in the opening 45 minutes between the Argos (2-8-0) and the Mountaineers (7-0-2, 3-0-1 CCC). Both teams had their fair share of opportunities on goal with eight shots a piece.

However, EOU was able to capitalize on an opportunity and get ahead on the score board 1-0 at the 28 minute mark. Junior Morgan Farrington received the ball with a defender on her back and played the ball out wide to fellow junior Cailin Koupal. Koupal took on her defender down the wing, beating her and cutting the ball across into the 18-yard box where senior Nan Kiebert was there to easily finish it home for her fourth goal of the year.

Kiebert wasn't finished getting among the action as she later took the ball down for a run of her own, crossing it to Abri Cardenas who ran onto the ball putting it in the net ten minutes into the second half. Junior Camie Edgington drew the secondary assist for an excellent lead pass that set Kiebert up for either a shot or pass of her own.

As usual, Mackinley Gregus was wreaking havoc for the opposition's defense. Her constant attack led the Argos to foul her inside the penalty box where she was awarded a penalty kick. Stepping up to the spot, Gregus sent the keeper the wrong way and put the Mounties up 3-0.

The fourth and final goal of the match was set up by Gregus who flicked the ball forward to Koupal. Already with an assist, Koupal battled through two defenders, sliding forward and getting a foot on the ball to profpel it past goalkeeper Jenna Evertz.

Gregus led both teams with six shots and four on goal while sophomore Kaitlyn McLeod tallied four shots with one on goal. The Mountaineers created a lot more chances in the second half, which led to three goals and 14 shots. The EOU defense limited UP's attack to only one shot in the second half and only one shot on goal in the entire game.

The Mountaineers will next travel to Ashland and Klamath Falls next weekend to play Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech on Friday and Saturday.
