Hutchinson's PK Saves Lead EOU to Shootout Victory at NAIA Championships

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark.- After an exhilarating 90 minutes of soccer on Friday, the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team needed to back it up again and face No. 13 John Brown University to keep their season alive on Saturday night. In EOU soccer fashion, the game came down to a penalty shootout after a 0-0 tie through 110 minutes, with the Mounties prevailing 3-2 thanks to three huge saves from goalkeeper Savannah Hutchinson.

In the penalty shootout, EOU shot first, sending junior Morgan Farrington up to the penalty spot as the first taker. Farrington easily put it past the keeper to give the Mounties the 1-0 advantage. John Brown stepped up next and answered with a goal to level the score at 1-1.

Freshman Kara Gooderham was the second shooter for EOU, but her shot was saved by Caitlyn Logan. Looking to keep the shootout score even, Hutchinson made a diving save to the right to keep EOU level at 1-1.

Next up was leading goal scorer senior Nan Kiebert, who rocketed her shot into the top-right corner to leave no chance for Logan and regain a 2-1 advantage for EOU. Once again, Hutchinson made another great save on JBU's third shooter to keep the count at 2-1.

Junior Camie Edgington made no mistake burying her shot as the Mounties' fourth shooter, extending the lead to 3-1. The Eagles' Anne Metz closed the gap to 3-2 through four shooters, forcing the shootout into a fifth and potentially final round.

After the JBU keeper came up with a big stop to keep their season alive, it came down to one final shot between JBU's Kathryn Huff and Hutchingson. With the chance to seal the win with a save, Hutchinson stood tall between the uprights and pulled off a flying save, batting the ball out of the goal and sending the Mountaineers to Alabama.

Not much separated the two sides across the 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, with chances fairly even across the pitch. The Eagles had their noses in front on the shot count 12-8 and 6-2 on goal.

The second half was a much stronger performance from the Mountaineers. After finding their second wind, the team played more composed, and started controlling the pace of the game.

In the second half, Kiebert dribbled the ball up the middle of the park and fed a ball through to Cailin Koupal who was on goal, but a defender blocked her shot. Koupal almost got another chance when Farrington collected the rebound and found Koupal again, but the defender was there to clear it to safety.

Hutchinson made a huge play stopping the Eagles' best chance of the game in the 55th minute. The JBU forward was in on goal, destined to score, but Hutchinson came charging out and slit in to get a touch on the ball, enough to keep it out of the net. In addition to her three huge penalty saves, Hutchinson finished with six saves across 110 minutes.

Neither side could net the game winner in regulation and the game was forced to overtime. John Brown almost snagged the game winner with two minutes left in the first overtime when a hard shot was kept out by the right post. Both teams were limited in scoring chances the rest of overtime as both defenses played tight to limit any mistakes.

EOU will now travel to Orange Beach, Alabama to the NAIA Championships site for the second year in a row. The Mounties will face No. 4 Central Methodist in the Round of 16 on Monday, Dec. 2nd at 11 a.m. Central Time. This will be the first matchup between the two teams.
