Mountaineers Retain Wagon Wheel with 22-15 Win over SOU

LA GRANDE, Ore. – With both teams receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25, Friday's showdown was an important step for one to jump into the rankings. The Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team earned the close 22-15 victory, also retaining the Wagon Wheel trophy for the annual battle between the teams.
 
Earlier on Friday, the Mountaineers also easily handled Umpqua Community College 33-9 to go undefeated on the day to advance to 6-1 on the early season.
 
Senior Blake McNall, juniors Josh Pine and Marco Retano and sophomore Ryan Redford each went 2-0 on the day for EOU while sophomore Keegan Mulhill and freshman Monte Zufelt were undefeated at 1-0.
 
The dual with the Raiders was a close one as Southern jumped out to a 12-6 lead through four matches. However, they then ran into EOU's gauntlet of top wrestlers beginning at 165 pounds as Pine, Mulhill, Retano and Redford each won to give the Mounties a 22-12 lead with just one more match remaining, sealing the victory.
 
Pine first won by an 11-3 major decision, followed by Mulhill's 19-4 technical fall to put EOU up 15-12. Retano won a key matchup at 184 pounds by a 6-3 decision to remain undefeated on the year and extend the Mountaineers' lead to 18-12. Redford closed out the win with a 9-1 major decision.
 
The Mountaineers will quickly turn around, competing at the Spokane Open on Sunday.
