SALEM, Ore. – Senior Day for the Corban University women's soccer team did not fall in the Warriors' favor, as the squad was edged out by the Battlin' Bears of Rocky Mountain College by a final tally of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a good, competitive game from both teams," said head coach Derek Faulkner. "It felt like we started slow but played much better in the second half, creating some good chances. We'll get back to work this week to get ready for the conference tournament."
Rocky Mountain rolled out of the gate quickly, as Mhari Smith notched her eighth goal of the season in the 9th minute to push the Battlin' Bears out in front. The first half was mostly controlled by the visitors, who put up nine shots in the opening stanza to the Warriors' three.
Corban reached the half at a manageable 1-0 deficit, looking to come up with some second-half chances.
The Warriors came out focused and strong in the second half, but the Rocky Mountain attackers once again managed to break through in the 67th minute, when Lauryn Gamache picked up her 15th goal of the season. That tally adds to Gamache's historic season, in which she has broken the Battlin' Bears' all-time scoring record.
Corban proved persistent, as just a few minutes later Chanel Garcia (73') scored on a set piece off the foot of Annouscka Kordom. Kordom's ball leaked right in front of the net and was poked in by the outstretched foot of Garcia.
The Navy and Gold maintained their strong attacking play up until the conclusion of the match, but the squad was unable to sneak an equalizer past Rocky Mountain keeper Maia Wetzel.
Wetzel's counterpart, Elizabeth Brock, picked up three saves in the defeat.
Corban finishes its regular season at 9-7-1 overall and 6-5-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play, having already clinched its spot in the conference tournament.
The CCC Championships will be held from November 12-15 in Springfield, Ore. at the Willamalane Complex. The Warriors will enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed, facing off with top-seeded Oregon Tech at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
