Mountaineer Volleyball Bounces Back With Senior Night Sweep of OIT

LA GRANDE, Ore. - Bouncing back quickly after a tough loss to No. 9 Southern Oregon the night before, the No. 3 Eastern Oregon volleyball team swept the Oregon Tech Owls 25-8, 25-14, and 25-10 on Senior Night at Quinn Coliseum on Saturday evening. The Mountaineers improved their record to 26-2 overall and 16-2 in Cascade Conference play.

Eastern celebrated their four seniors, Megan Bunn, Hailee Ackerman, Nina Bailey, and Taylor Tibbetts before the match. A strong senior class, both Bunn and Ackerman have been four year players under head coach Kaki McLean Morehead. Both Bailey and Tibbetts were transfers playing their junior and now senior seasons for Morehead.

Hitting .297overall for the match and out-digging the Owls 59-48, the Mountaineer offense and defense were back in top shape. Senior outside hitter Megan Bunn led the team in kills with 14 and digs with 17, adding another double-double to her resume. Sophomore Cambree Scott came through with nine kills and senior middle hitter Nina Bailey recorded six kills and had a team high of six blocks. Junior setter Madison Pilon tallied 24 assists while freshman setter Brooke Dodge had 13. Following Bunn, junior defensive specialist Aspen Christiansen recorded 14 digs. Eastern also had a season high of 11 aces on the night.

In all three sets the Mountaineers never allowed the Owls to score more than 14 points, leading every single set from start to finish. In the first set, the Mountaineers gained control early as they were the first to five points at 5-3. They would then go on to lead by 14 points at 20-6 and won the set 25-8.

The Mountaineers never let up, using the second and third sets to show just how dominant of a team they are. Going on an eight-point run at 2-2 in the second set, the Mountaineers led 10-2 forcing an OIT timeout. EOU kept its composure and finished out the set 25-14. The third and final set was all Mountaineers again, going on yet another run making it 8-1 in the first nine points. After back-to-back kills by Bailey and back-to-back aces by Pilon, the Mountaineers were up by double-digits at 13-2. EOU kept the Owls to just four points while the Mountaineers hit 20 before finally finishing the game with the sweep 25-10.

For the Owls, Ashley Ripplinger led the team in kills with six and blocks at three. Amanda Powley had a team-high of nine assists while Aubrey Kievit managed 15 digs.

EOU travels to Warner Pacific and Multnomah next weekend for their final two CCC games of the regular season before the CCC Championships begin Nov. 12.
