Mountaineers Slay Knights 5-0

LA GRANDE, Ore.- The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team was in top form Saturday afternoon, easily defeating Warner Pacific 5-0 in the second to last game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season, Saturday at Community Stadium.

The Mountaineer attack was in full force Saturday scoring five goals with three in the opening 45 minutes and two in the second half. There was plenty of chances to score more, with the team racking up 35 shots across the 90 minutes.

It took 28 minutes to open the flood gates, as the first goal was a penalty kicked taken by Nan Kiebert, tallying her eighth goal on the season. Less than a minute later, Cailin Koupal doubled the lead as she received a great Mackinley Gregus through ball. Koupal's speed was unmatched, flying by the defender and taking a touch around the keeper as she passed it into the net.

Freshman Mikenna Rasmussen made it three goals in 12 minutes for EOU. The freshman notched her first career goal as a Mountie, cleaning up a bobbling ball after a corner kick. Fellow freshman Lindsey Balkenbush drew the assists.

Kaitlyn McLeod scored her first goal of the season, striking the ball low and hard into the back of the net to increase the lead to 4-0.

Abri Cardenas and McLeod were combining nicely in the middle of the field, almost resulting in a second goal for McLeod, but WPU keeper Alyssa Guthrie did well to deny her.

The chances kept coming for the Mounties, keeping the pressure on the Knights constantly. Camie Edgington was denied a goal by the crossbar.

Kayla Storm tallied the final goal of the evening, when Sydney Gardner laid the ball off and Storm one time shot it over the keeper's head into the back of the net.

Kiebert paced the team in shots with seven, four of which were on goal. She was closely followed by McLeod and Cardenas with five apiece.

Cydni Cottrell and Savannah Hutchinson combined for the shutout, and the defense was stout, not allowing the opposition any shots.

The team will be home again Sunday for Senior Day, celebrating seniors Nan Kiebert, Josee Bassett, Cydni Cottrell, Abri Cardenas and Jenna Jensen. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. against Multnomah at Community Stadium.
