KIRKLAND, Wash. – The (RV) Corban University men's basketball team handled Salish Kootenai College on Friday by a score of 112-70. With the win, the Warriors start off the Northwest Classic with a victory.
"We were pleased with our effort and our efficiency on both ends of the floor this afternoon," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "We had multiple guys in double-figures, both in points and rebounds. We are understanding how to play with each other for long stretches of time. Now it's time to understand how we can grow from tonight's game and then move on to tomorrow."
The Warriors' shooting was strong in the bout, as they hit their shots at a 45.7% clip. Six Corban players reached double-figure points in the matchup. Reece Van Lierop and Mauricio Smith each dropped 20 points in the victory, while Denis Kirichenko (14), Isiah Quintero (13), Elijah Welch (13), and Jake Estep (10) also put up double-digits. Kirichenko and Quintero earned double-doubles with their efforts on the boards as well.
Corban soared for 68 rebounds in the game, doubling the Bison total of 34 rebounds. In a dominant display, the Navy and Gold also registered 14 steals. Five of those steals were recorded by Taylor Anderson off the bench as a defensive sparkplug.
Van Lierop found his stroke in the triumph, as a seven-of-nine shooting day led to six made three-pointers and 20 points overall. Smith's afternoon was strong on both ends of the floor, as he put up 20 points on 15 shots and tallied nine rebounds for the Warriors.
The Bison struggled to mount any offensive attack against the Navy and Gold, as they mustered just a 37.1% shooting percentage. Their top performer was Andruw Allen, who ended the night with 23 points (game-high).
The Warriors (3-1) will return tomorrow for a matchup against Northwest Indian College to close out play in the Northwest Classic, during which they will look to keep improving upon their strong start to the season.
