Eugene, Ore. - The Northwest Christian University women's basketball team won 97-64 over Northwest University on Saturday night behind the strong display by freshmen Aspen Slifka and Kaylen Kamelamela. The pair combined to score or assist on 24 of the Beacons 35 made field goals in the victory.
NCU went into halftime leading 57-31 after outscoring the Eagles 33-12 in the second quarter. The 57 points scored in the first half ties the record set three years ago against Warner Pacific for the most points in a single half. On the night the Beacons shot a season-high 58.3% from the field and 45.5% from beyond the arc.
"Tonight we played a complete game on both ends of the floor." stated Head Coach Chad Meadors. "Defensively we were locked in and consistently turned them over."
Kamelamela and Slifka scored 21 points a piece for the Beacons (7-2, 3-0 CCC). Kamelamela was 8-for-9 shooting along with eight assists and five steals while Slfka was 7-for-8 shooting. Junior Morgan McKinney scored 18 points, two assists and three steals while Senior guard Shanay Dotson scored six points, five assists, and three steals.
Meadors said, "Kaylen played with tremendous tempo and got everyone involved with timely passing. Morgan and Aspen continue to be really efficient and make the extra pass when it's there. It feels great to go into the Christmas break on a high note nad we are excited to take this momentum into the new year."
Jackie Bento led the Eagles (2-10, 1-3) with 11 points while Sam Van Loo had nine points and seven rebounds. Livi Lindsey added eight points and seven rebounds. NU outrebounded the Beacons 39-33 in the loss.
The Beacons will hit the road to play Menlo College (6-4) on Sunday, December 29, at 2pm in Atherton, California.
