Randall, DiLulo Clinch All-American on 1st Day of NAIA Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – In their final collegiate competitions, seniors Drake Randall and Harley DiLulo each earned All-American status, winning their win-and-in matches on the first day of the NAIA Wrestling Championships on Friday.

The pair became the third and fourth All-Americans in EOU history since the program returned in 2016-17. The duo joins Matt Nguyen from two years ago and Eric Fan from 2017-18, with the Mountaineers having at least one All-American in all three seasons since returning.

Both Randall and DiLulo  went 3-1 on the day, but took different routes to reach All-American honors. Randall, ranked No. 3 at 165 pounds, began his day with two victories to reach the quarterfinals.

Randall first defeated Benedictine's Tyler Harris by a 13-5 major decision, followed by a pin of Bluefield's Noah Reynolds. In the quarterfinals, Randall met up with CCC rival and No. 6 ranked Andrew Bartel of Montana State-Northern. The familiar opponents battled in another close match, with Bartel narrowly winning 3-2 on a late takedown.

Responding well, EOU's senior captain Randall responded with an 8-6 decision over Graceland's Drew Sams in the win-and-in match for the top-8. The top-8 of each weight class earn All-American status.

DiLulo drew a tough match to start the day at 197 pounds in No. 5-ranked Dialo Matsimela of Life. The senior transfer put up a strong fight in the match, falling narrowly by a 7-4 decision.

DiLulo was then forced to wrestle out of a deep consolation bracket to become All-American. The senior first defeated No. 11 Riley Williams of Wayland Baptist convincingly 20-5 by technical fall. He followed up with a 12-2 major decision against Reinhardt's Jacob Henderson to advance to the win-and-in match.

In the final match of the day for EOU, DiLulo faced No. 8 Eric Deluse of Cumberlands. The match went back-and-forth, with the score tied 2-2 entering the third. DiLulo was able to earn a one-point escape to claim the lead, forcing Deluse to score a takedown. However, DiLulo was able to stay on his feet the remainder of the period, earning All-American with the victory.

Both Randall and DiLulo will wrestle to place between third and eighth place on Saturday. Randall will face No. 4 Brennan Swafford of Graceland while DiLulo rematches No. 5 Matsimela of Life.

EOU had three other wrestlers compete on day one of nationals. Senior Mhar Caballa won his first match 4-2, but then was defeated in the following two rounds. Caballa completed an incredible year in which he went 34-5 overall, placing third at the CCC Championships.

Freshman Ryan Redford dropped his first match, but won his next consolation round bout with a 3-2 decision over Truett McConnell's Jacob Matheson. Redford then fell to No. 11 Sam Osho of Marian by an 8-3 decision.

Junior Blake McNall also wrestled, falling in his first two matches. The junior battled in an extremely close match vs. No. 5 Zachary Durbin in the consolation bracket, which went two overtime periods before Durbin won by sudden victory.

EOU sits in 21st place after the first day with 17 points. Southern Oregon sits just ahead in 19th with 17.5 points. Grand View leads the way with a dominating 137 points, well ahead of second place Life with 56.5 points.
