Schulz Leads Owls to Split with LC State

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -  Oregon Tech's John Schulz broke the school record for strike-outs in a single season with a complete game effort leading the Owls to a 12-10 win over Lewis-Clark State in game two after the Warriors won game one 11-8 at Kiger Stadium.
 
Schulz had 10 K's giving him a total of 75 on the season. The loss for LC State snapped a ten game win streak.

The Warriors out-lasted Tech with eight runs over the final three innings to erase a 6-3 OIT lead.
 
Tech took a 2-1 lead in the third on an Austin Zavala two-run double. LC then tied the game at two with one run in the 4th on a Kody Garvin sacrifice fly.
 
The Hustlin' Owls took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Josh Kallstrom and Zavala. After the Warriors scored an unearned run in the 6th, Tech took its biggest lead of the series 6-3 with two runs in the sixth on a Micah Jio two-run double.
 
Lewis-Clark State broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh on five doubles and Garvin home run to go up 10-6.
 
Tech answered with two-runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits by Emmett Covello and Austin Florez.
 
LC added a run in the eighth to win 11-8. Matt Driver picked up the win to move to 2-0, Jesse Parker pitched the ninth to earn his first save of the year for the Warriors.
 
LC out-hit OIT 13-12 for the game with Garvin, A.J. Davis, Darren Trainor, and Kyle Callahan all contributing two hits each in the win.
 
Zavala had three hits to lead the Owls with Kai Fong, Kallstrom, and Covello adding two hits each in the loss.

Schulz was the story in game two for the Owls throwing a total of 162 pitches to pick up the win for OIT.
 
Each team had 16-hits in the game.
 
After LC took a 1-0 lead in the first, the Owls answered with a Zavala double scoring Alex Malcolm to tie the game.
 
Zach Needham gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the second with a solo homer. The Owls again tied the game at 2-2 with a Florez RBI double.
 
A two-run home run by Callahan gave LC a 4-2 lead in the third. It was 5-2 before the inning ended thanks to a Jeff Bart double.
 
A Garvin double in the fourth plated two more as the Warriors took a 7-2 lead.
 
A huge three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth off the bat Jio cut the LC lead back to 7-5.
 
Garvin was at it again for the Warriors with a two-run home run to push the lead to 9-5. Tech came right back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by a Kallstrom two-run single to make it a 9-9 game.
 
A sacrifice fly by Zavala gave the Owls a 10-9 lead to start the 8th, Kia Fong kept the Hooter offense moving with an RBI double giving the Owls an 11-9 lead. Nevan Watanabe then single home Fong to give the Owls a 12-9 lead headed to the ninth.
 
Needham homered to start the inning cutting the Owls lead back to 12-10. Schulz then retired the next three hitters in order to give Oregon Tech the 12-10 win.
 
Malcolm, Kallstrom, Zavala, Fong, Watanabe, Florez, and Michael Tarakhchyan all had two-hits each for the Owls in the win.
 
Trainor, Callahan, and Garvin had three-hits each in the loss for LC State.
 
The teams will conclude the series Sunday morning at 11:00 am Kiger Stadium.
