Track/Field Athletes Receive Diplomas at CCC Meet
ASHLAND, Ore.- With student-athletes the choice of competing in a post-season championship or attending their campus commencement ceremonies can sometimes be difficult. A long held tradition in the Cascade Conference of providing a ceremony at the annual Track and Field Championships alleviates that pressure.
This past Saturday sixteen student-athletes from around the league, who, as a result of competing, missed their campus graduation had their degrees conferred by Southern Oregon University President Dr. Linda Schott. Southern hosted the 2019 meet and Schott presided over a ceremony filled with all the pomp and circumstance of any graduation down to the final "cap toss."
Leading the processional of graduates was Sarah Freeman, Dr. Heike McNeil and Schott. Freeman is the Asst. Director of Athletics at NCU. McNeil recently retired as head cross country coach/asst. t/f coach at NCU and has returned full time to the classroom. McNeil received her doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Oregon and is a member of the teaching Faculty at NCU. Schott, SOU’s President since 2016 is a graduate of Baylor University where she received her bachelor’s degree in history and German. Dr. Schott then transitioned to Stanford University where she earned her master’s degree in history and her doctorate in history and humanities.
