EOU’s Yap, Ishii & Flom Earn Athletic Training Staff of the Year Honor
LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon athletic trainers Russell Yap, Hillary Ishii and Liz Flom have been recognized as the Cascade Collegiate Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year for the 2018-19 academic year, as announced by the league office.
Winners are selected based on a survey that was taken by CCC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee members and distributed to student-athletes around the conference. This is the fifth year of the award.
“What a great honor for my staff and I,” said Yap. “We strive to provide the best care not only to our athletes, but also for all those who visit our campus. We want to thank those who had a great experience when they visited EOU. This couldn’t be possible without the support from our coaches, staff, sports medicine team members, and administrators. To be selected among our conference’s dedicated athletic training staffs is truly an honor.”
Yap, who has been with EOU as the head athletic trainer since 2007, has oversight for all of EOU’s varsity programs and primarily works with football and men’s basketball. Prior to EOU, Yap was an assistant ATC at Missouri University of Science and Technology from 2005-2007 and an intern at New Mexico State University during the 2002-2003 season. He received his undergraduate degree in Science from Oregon State University and his Masters from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Ishii joined the EOU staff in January of 2016 after serving as an assistant ATC at Eastern New Mexico University from 2012-2015. Ishii has worked with a number of teams in her third year with EOU, currently overseeing training duties for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and men’s and women’s track and field. Ishii received her degrees from Eastern Washington University and Cameron University.
Flom joined EOU at the beginning of 2019, bringing with her a plethora of experience that made her a key addition to the EOU Sport Medicine Staff. From 2016-2018, Flom was the Athletic Trainer for all sports at Northwest Christian. She currently works with the volleyball, men’s and women’s wrestling, women’s basketball and softball teams. Flom received her Master’s in Athletic Training from Montana State University in 2009. In 2007 she graduated from EOU with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education & Health with Exercise Science Emphasis.
“The EOU training staff not only goes above and beyond to provide the highest quality care for our student-athletes, they foster meaningful relationships, providing an environment where they are also mentors and advocates for our students,” said assistant athletic director Stephanie Upshaw. “They embrace a mindset of growth, consistently engaged in new techniques and strategies to advance their care. Many student-athletes spend just as much time with their trainer as nearly anyone else while at EOU. The role they play in a students experience is vital, and we are fortunate to have an incredible staff.”
Yap will be put forth as the CCC’s nominee for NAIA-ATA Athletic Trainer of the Year.
