Southern Oregon’s Josh McDermott Named Sports Information Director of the Year
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Southern Oregon University’s Josh McDermott has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Sports Information Director of the Year, the league office announced.
The annual award is voted on by the sports information directors of the CCC, recognizing outstanding work in promotion, work with CCC and NAIA championships events, publicity and marketing efforts.
"Congratulations to Josh McDermott on his selection as the Cascade Conference Sports Information Director of the Year," stated Commissioner Robert Cashell. “Not only does Josh continue to elevate Raider Athletics, he has played a critical role in supporting CCC and NAIA Championships during the past year.”
McDermott, completing his 6th year with the Raiders, led the Sports Information coverage for the CCC volleyball, softball and Track & Field championships which were hosted by SOU during the 2018-19 sports season. In addition, he also handled NAIA Opening Rounds in men’s soccer and softball that the Raiders hosted. Oversight included coordinating the media, statistics, video and website coverage for all the tournament and enabling live webcasts for all games. McDermott also helped with organization of, and announcing at the tournament banquets, where conference award winners were recognized.
“I'm so lucky to be around people I genuinely love every day and can't thank them enough for making SOU such a special place to work, stated McDermott. “My bosses excel at putting people in position to succeed and the culture our coaches and student-athletes have created motivates me to do right by them. There are so many talented people throughout this school and this conference and it's extremely rewarding to be a part of.”
McDermott, designed the gymnasium floor markings in SOU’s brand new Lithia Motors Pavilion which opened for use this past fall. In addition, to the floor, the color scheme and all of the new championship banners that adorn the facility were designed by McDermott.
A leader in the use of various media delivery models, McDermott continues as the sole manager of the @souraiders social media accounts, which eclipsed 11,000 total followers this year. In addition, a redesigned souraiders.com website brought increased use of the stellar live streaming services provided.
Nationally his work received a fourth first-place award in the NAIA-SIDA Publications Contest in the last four years, in a fourth different category (game notes). McDermott also served as a judge in two categories. McDermott also provided coverage of SOU men’s soccer’s first trip to the NAIA final site, an NAIA combined title in cross country, the deepest ever run for the Raider volleyball team, and the best regular season in SOU softball program history.
McDermott will go on to represent the CCC as the league nominee for the national SID of the Year Award.
