Volleyball Drops Two Matches To Open Season

 FULLERTON, Calif.  – Evergreen lost a pair of matches to open the 2019 volleyball season. The Geoducks fell to La Sierra 3-2 in the morning and lost 3-1 against Vanguard in the afternoon on Wednesday.  

Evergreen (0-2) will face John Brown University at 8 a.m. and end the HIU Summer Slam at 2 p.m. against host Hope International. John Brown lost both its matches today against Montana Tech (3-0) and The Master’s (Calif.) (3-0). Hope International won 3-0 this afternoon against Benedictine University and plays University of Saint Francis tonight.
 
La Sierra 3, Evergreen 2
In the first set, the set was tied at 24 before Evergreen won the set with a kill by Zoe Shaw and an attack error by La Sierra. The Eagles came back and won the second set but Evergreen won the third. La Sierra won the fourth and took the win with the fifth set.
The Geoducks were led by Shaw, who had a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Jocelyn Hillyar added 16 kills and Sierra Wolff recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 10 digs.
La Sierra was led by Kiana Krumm, with 17 kills and 15 digs and Adiva Joseph added 10 kills.
 
Vanguard 3, Evergreen 1
Evergreen fell in the first two sets before coming out after intermission and winning the third set. The set was all tied up at 17 before the Geoducks went on a 3-0 run off of attacking errors. Vanguard called a timeout and got the next point. Renita Gray recorded the next point for Evergreen with a kill and the Lions then went on a 3-0 run. Evergreen called a timeout and got the next point after with a serving error and Evergreen took the set win after Renita Gray recorded a kill. Vanguard won the fourth set and took the win.
Evergreen was led by Zoe Shaw with 16 kills. Sierra Wolff had 29 assists and Nicole Duryea added 11 digs.
Vanguard was led by Aubryn Coale, who had 18 kills and Kamelah Noel added 10.
