HELENA, Mont. – The Evergreen State College volleyball team won its first match of the 2019 season, defeating Carroll College 3-2 (25-22, 14-25, 16-25, 25-22, 17-15) Wednesday night.

The last five times, the Saints and Geoducks have faced each other, Carroll College always came out with the win. But that didn’t happen this time.

Evergreen won the first set before falling in the second and third set. The Geoducks won the fourth to tie the match 2-2. In the fifth and final set, Carroll College had a 7-3 lead before the Geoducks went on a 5-0 run, with kills by Renita Gray and attack errors by the Saints. The set was tied at 15 until a couple of kills by Gray gave Evergreen the win.

The Geoducks were led by Jocelyn Hillyar, who had 21 kills and Renita Gray added 13. Sierra Wolff had a double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs.

Carroll was led by Lexi Mikkelsen, who had 13 kills and Taelyr Krantz and Sophia Spoja both recorded 10 digs.

“It was a battle but after seven years we finally beat Carroll,” said head coach Angela Spoja. “We took a little mental break in set two and three but found our momentum in set four. Renita Gray and Jocelyn Hillyar had exceptional nights and we are collectively getting better each match and each day. We are headed into this weekend with confidence.”

“Sierra Wolff had a double-double and played great,” added Spoja. “She ran our offense with 45 assists and 11 digs.”

Evergreen will head to Butte, Mont., for the Big Sky Challenge on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Geoducks will see Montana State University-Northern at 1 p.m. (MST) and Rocky Mountain College at 7 p.m. (MST). On Saturday, Evergreen will face University of Montana-Western at 9 a.m. (MST) and Providence at 1 p.m. (MST).
