FREMONT, Neb. – It was a tale of two halves on Sunday as the No. 14 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at No. 9 Midland in non-conference play.
The Mountaineers (1-0-1) played a strong first half, opening the scoring early in just the 11th minute. Senior defender Josee Bassett took a free kick that was headed by senior Nan Kiebert, landing in front of junior Camie Edgington, who quickly played it back to senior midfielder Jenna Jensen. The senior wasted no time and buried in the back of the net for her first goal in 2019 to put EOU up 1-0.
The Blue and Gold kept up the pressure in the half looking to extend its lead, holding an 8-1 shot advantage through 45 minutes.
The tides turned in the second half as the Warriors began to put on the pressure for a tying goal. In the 67th minute they found just that, as Nayeli Rodriguez knotted the score at 1-1. Midland continued their pressure, out shooting EOU 10-5 in the half. Goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell made a great save late in regulation to send the match to overtime.
In overtime, both teams put together a couple of scoring opportunities, but after 20 extra minutes, the game remained tied at 1-1 and resulted in a draw for both top-15 squads.
Overall, EOU led the match with a 15-14 shot advantage and 9-4 on net. Cottrell made three saves for the Mounties. Kiebert put on pressure all day with six shots and five on goal. Bassett had five shots and three on frame while sophomore Kaitlyn McLeod had two shots.
The Mountaineers return home for another top-25 matchup, hosting No. 10 Embry-Riddle on Aug. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Community Stadium.
