Evergreen Falls In Five To 11th-Ranked Corban
After a hard-fought match, The Evergreen State College women's volleyball team fell 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-19, 10-15) to 11th-ranked Corban Saturday night.
"This was a hard-fought match on both sides," said head coach Angela Spoja. "We came up short in the fifth set with too many unforced errors but couldn't be prouder of this team and the battle they fought tonight."
Evergreen was led by Zoe Shaw, who recorded 26 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. Lily Stewart added 11 kills. Sierra Wolff had 57 assists, and Leiko Yamauchi recorded 20 digs for the match. The Geoducks recorded four players with double-digit kills.
"Zoe Shaw continues to amaze with another double-double, in which we also had four defenders in double-digit digs," said Spoja. "Sierra continues to stay at the top by adding another 57 assists. Renita Gray, Zoe Shaw and Lily Stewart combined for a total of 51 of the 64 kills we had tonight."
"It was a well-rounded effort," added Spoja. "We are excited to get on the road and face two more ranked opponents this coming week."
Corban was led by Cassie Cunningham, who had 13 kills and Kealani Ontai had 17 digs. Jadyn Mullen recorded 28 assists and Cierra Leopoldino had 24 assists.
The match went back and forth with the Warriors winning the first and third set. Evergreen won the second and fourth set. In the final set, Evergreen ended a Corban 10-2 run with an attack error. Evergreen scored the next five points off kills and came within three at 10-7. The Geoducks scored three more points before falling 15-10 in the final set.
Evergreen will hit the road and face three Cascade Collegiate Conference teams. The Geoducks will face Walla Walla at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19, Eastern Oregon at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20, and College of Idaho at 5 p.m. MST. Eastern Oregon is ranked eighth this week in the NAIA coaches poll, while College of Idaho is 20th.
