Eugene, Ore. -    The Northwest Christian University men’s soccer team won their first game of 2019 as they started Cascade Collegiate Conference play with a 1-0 victory over the Eastern Oregon Mounties.

The lone goal for NCU was a header from senior Nicolas Schapochnik with three minutes left in the match. Junior Christoph Mai assisted on the goal. Senior goalkeeper Chris Kirby contributed six saves for the Beacons. EOU (2-3, CCC 0-1) outshot the Beacons 16-4 for the match.

The win marks the first victory all-time for the Beacons against Eastern Oregon, EOU currently holds the all-time series 1-5.

Senior Elvis Pavon led the Mounties with three attempted shots on goal.

Following the win Beacons Head Coach Will Hander stated, “We stuck to the plan, the guys trusted each other, and we were able to capitalize on our one opportunity. Christoph Mai was big today he kept us organized in the middle and was solid for 90 minutes and that’s what we needed to win. Chris Kirby had a great week of training and that showed as he was able to take complete control over the box today.”
NCU (1-1, CCC 1-0) will look to take their momentum into Saturday as they play host to The College of Idaho at the Les Schwab Sports Park at 3:00 pm.
