(RV) Warrior Men’s Soccer Dismantles Mountaineer Defense in 6-1 Drubbing
SALEM, Ore. – To say the Warrior offense was clicking today would be a gross understatement, as the Warriors' barrage of attacks proved more than enough en route to a 6-1 victory over CCC rival Eastern Oregon at CFC Soccer Complex on Saturday.
Corban's season-high six goals handed the Mountaineers their second conference loss in as many days. On the other side of the coin, the Warriors have won their second straight conference matchup, outscoring their opponents 8-1 over that span.
"What a great performance by the guys today," said head coach Tim Kagey. "Today was an example of our depth as a team. Kohl Hurtado, Nate Sherwood, Alex Anaya, and Miguel Rodriguez came on and really made us better. There weren't a lot of guys who did not perform well today, so we will take it, prepare for next weekend, and start again."
The Navy and Gold scored on each one of their shots on goal in the contest. Mountaineer keepers did not have a single save in the entire 90 minutes. In addition, each one of the Warriors' tallies were picked up by different players. Corban's first-half goals were scored by Hakeem Smith off of an assist from Chadwayne Johnson in the 10th minute and Kohl Hurtado on a penalty kick in the 37th minute that was originally saved before referees convened and concluded that there would be a retry of the shot due to the Eastern Oregon players entering the box too soon. After the half, the Warriors poured it on with Yuki Onishi, Matheus Giron, Miguel Rodriguez, and Nate Sherwood etching their names into the goal column.
For the Warriors, Yuki Onishi put the first goal of the second half in the net in the 52nd minute to boost the lead to 3-0. This was the second straight game that Onishi has scored a goal in the 52nd minute. Giron seized an opportunity to score a penalty kick goal in the 62nd minute, followed shortly after by Rodriguez's 63rd minute strike resulting from a beautiful through ball off the boot of Sherwood. Finalizing the Warrior scoring was Sherwood, with a tally on a one-time shot in the 72nd minute, assisted by Quentin Petcu.
Nic Farr was sharp in net in his first conference action of the season. He compiled a total of seven saves and came close to racking up a clean sheet, only allowing one goal, a penalty kick in the 89th minute by Javier Moran.
Now it is time for the Warriors to hit the road next weekend, where they will be matching up against Warner Pacific University and Multnomah University on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Each of the two games will be played at 4:30 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
